0 Run 3, Week 3 (CT5K): It's Not Freezing If You're Moving!


Went for a run tonight with my running buddy around 6:30 pm. It was 32 degrees outside & thankfully, not windy at all. We were both bundled up to the hilt, each of us wearing several layers of clothing. To the casual passerby, we probably looked like a small herd of load-bearing yaks. ;-)

Thankfully, the knees held up tonight. I took 2 Ibuprofen before our run, which helped keep any potential inflammation in check. For the most part, I wasn't too concerned, as it was a short run.

My legs were a bit stiff at first -- So I arrived early & went for a brief walk on my own first to see how the knees would fare. At the outset, the joints of my knees & ankles weren't aligning quite right when I walked & so my footfalls were slightly painful. My ankles were making cracking sounds on & off & my knee joints felt really off-kilter. I had to shake my legs out a bit so that the joints quite literally "snapped into place." ;-) At times I felt more like a Lego Bionicle than a human being. ;-) As I got further into my walk, things got considerably better, as the "kinks" & "creaks" in my body began to "iron" themselves out. [Sheesh, I sound like I'm comparing myself to a piece of rusty old machinery! ;-) As a woman in her thirty-somethings, I might not exactly be thought of as a spring chicken, but it's not exactly like I'm ready to start geezing quite yet either. ;-) ]

The run went pretty well. I didn't experience any noticeable throbbing or pain in the knees or other joints. I think that all of the walking I did in advance really helped. Plus, my friend & I also walked together for about 10 minutes before starting to run.

As we ran around the lake, the wafting smell of food from nearby restaurants proved to be an irresistible lure! ;-) After our run, we ended up eating dinner together at one of the surrounding restaurants, which was a definitely a nice way to end to our run! ;-)


Since tonight's run was quick & painless (& even, dare I say, effortless), I think I'm going to see how I'll fare tomorrow with a longer solo run. I'd like to run much earlier in the day, i.e., around 2 or 3 pm when the sun's at its warmest. I'm going to pick up with Run 1 of Week 10 (BOHR), which will hopefully be a gentle & pain-free 30-minute run. I'm going to do my best to take it easy on the knees, and keep running on an even-surface as much as possible.

I've been doing some more thinking about how, exactly, I managed to bung up my knee: In addition to the unwise, back-to-back runs I did the previous week, it seems that the last solo run I did, which had constant elevation changes from grassy areas to sidewalks to roads, really did a number on my knees, as my foot strikes were less even & my joints most definitely took a greater pounding as a result. This, in addition to the other factors I've already mentioned, definitely contributed to the knee joint pain I've been feeling over the past 1-2 weeks. Hopefully, with a little TLC & the newfound wisdom (acquired the "hard way" via knee pain, caused by my miscalculations & misjudgments, & other fun mistakes!), I'll be able to keep running, footloose & fancy-free. Er, make that injury-free. ;-) Cross the fingers.
