1 Run 2, Week 6 (BOHR): Just Putting In The Miles

Today at 7:45 AM, I went running with Erik & my little sister, Abby (a.k.a. Missladybug of the hilarious & inspirational blog, Ladybug & Co). I was proud of my sister for joining us today on our early morning run, especially since she'd been up late working the night before. Of course I was also proud of Erik for sticking in there & running with his bum ankle.

Speaking of which, Erik ran about 25 minutes or so before his ankle started throbbing again. My sister ran about 16 minutes or so, which was very good considering she'd only previously been running multiple intervals of approximately 10 consecutive minutes at a time.

I ran 1 hours & 5 minutes today. (Yes, I know, way past the 33 minutes I was supposed to do today.) Had a rather sluggish run, which was probably due to a combination of an almost empty tank from skipping dinner last night (i.e., I had a slice of olive bread before bed & a swig of OJ this morning before our run) & a bit of dehydration.

About 30 minutes into my run (i.e., the half-way point), I turned around & headed back. At around the 40 minute mark, I tried psyching myself up to stay energetic, telling myself I was strong & still had lots of reserve energy to tap. I sped up considerably, believing my own hype. ;-) Then at about the 50 minute mark, I slowed up to a pace which was probably slower than the one I ran at 30 minutes, but atleast I was moving forward. ;-) The sun was also considerably hotter & my throat was being to feel rather parched.

I kept chugging along until I saw the pool in front of our villa, at which point I sped up again. (At this point, I'd already entered the hotel/villa complex & had been running on the path parallel to the golf-course for several minutes.) I ran to the gate at the far end of the complex, at which point I turned around & doubled back to the villa. I sprinted from the turn-around point at the gate to a lamp just past the pool, which I used as a marker point for the end of my run. My sprint to the finish was very strong. Apparently, I did have some steam left in the tank! ;-)

Then I walked for another 10-15 minutes along the path parallel to the golf course. I walked into the fitness center, drank 4 cups of water, & then took 2 cups of water with me to give to Erik & Ab. I didn't see them on the golf-course path, so I walked outside the hotel & villa complex to see if I could find them on the sidewalk bordering the road. In the distance, I saw two figures, one in a white T & black shorts & another dressed in a black tank & yoga pants, which of course I knew just had to be them. They were very happy to see me, especially since I was there to greet them with two cups of water! ;-)

We all walked back to the villa & had smoothies for breakfast. After our showers, we headed down to the pool, which is where I'm currently typing this post. 8-) The complex has wireless (Yea!), plus there are electrical outlets at the pool.

Right now, I'm under an umbrella, so my laptop doesn't explode from the desert heat! ;-)

As soon as I finish this post, I'm going to put away the umbrella, sun a bit, & then take a well-deserved dip in the pool & then relax my spent muscles in the hot tub. OK, I think I'm going to start that process right about now. 8-)

0 1 Mile Warm-Up Run + Strength-Training Workout

Today at around 8 am, Erik & I went to the fitness center for our strength training workout. I ran a mile on the treadmill to warm-up & then did various leg lift exercises (20 reps each for each leg), free-weight arm exercises (for each arm, 20 reps each of the following: flat flies, shrugs, shoulder press, upright rows, lateral raises, one-arm rows, side bends, & concentration curls), 10 girl-style push-ups, & 100 crunches.

Erik warmed up with 5 minutes of cycling on the stationary bike, & did 2 full-body circuits with free-weights.

0 Run 1, Week 6 (BOHR): Living The Fantasy!

Today was my first day running for an entire hour. Yes, I've finally become a one hour runner, and have done it 4 weeks in advance of the original BOHR program's timeline. Either my body's in hyperwarp drive speed, fast-tracking its way to ├╝ber-fitness, or I might be doing something completely insane.

Well, I feel exceptionally good, even several hours after the run, so I'm not sure what to think just yet. ;-)

Erik & I went out for our run around 8:15 am today. It was around 75 degrees outside. (Oh yeah, almost forgot to mention that I'm now in Palm Spring, CA, on a vacation with my family. ;-) The beautiful weather here certainly helps to make running an incredibly pleasant experience! Especially considering the rather icky weather I ran in only last week, on the opposite coast. What a contrast! Makes me think seriously about moving to the west coast permanently, where I could run outside almost every day of the year. Wow! How great would THAT be!)

Erik ran about 40 minutes with me, which was also his single longest consecutive period of running since last summer. He was again having ankle problems towards the end of his run, so I'm not sure how wise it was for him to do that. At any rate, I'm proud of him for the accomplishment, despite the cost of his efforts.

It was an amazing run. The weather was perfect, the surroundings were awe-inspiring, & I felt really strong. At around the 25 minute mark, I felt the endorphins kick in, & it was a really big rush. I sped up & kept going faster & faster until about the 45 minute mark. Around 50 minutes, I slowed up a bit, but then at 55 minutes sped back up again & ran at a good clip until the finish (i.e., the 1 hour mark). Was really proud of the way I ran today. Things are really starting to click into place for me & I'm just overjoyed about it!

Went faster during the last half of the run than I had done over the last few weeks. Definitely had a breakthrough run today!

First of all, I'd like to congratulate Steve Speirs (a.k.a., cymrusteve) on his amazing, sub 3-hour finish! His finish time according to the MCM remote tracker was "02:54:00 @ Finish, Pace 6:38."

5 Marine Corps Marathon This Sunday!

1 Run 3, Week 5 (BOHR): Putting the Rain Behind Me!

I deserve a few extra gold stars for the two back-to-back runs I did today & yesterday. First of all, today was my first time running back-to-back runs since I first began my training. Second of all, I ran in the pouring raining & the cold. And last of all (but certainly not least of all!), I ran another 48-50 minutes, starting at 4 pm today. (Since my iPod died on me during the last mile or so, I'm not sure of the exact time, but going by the courtyard clock I checked as I ran by, I think it's a fairly accurate estimate.)

To make the run even more fun (!), it started to pour even harder during the last two miles. (I'm being extremely sarcastic, in case you didn't notice! ;-) )

To make things even more interesting (!), my flimsy water-resistant jacket didn't have a hood (!), although I did have one of those fleece headbands to cover my ears. But no matter, neither article of clothing kept me dry in the least.

Since water-resistant is anywhere near the same thing as waterproof (!), you can imagine exactly how drenched I was! Of course, water-resistant garments are only meant for a few minutes of water exposure, not 50 minutes of wet-weather running! Not exactly great for running.

My sneakers & socks were also ridiculously water-logged. After the run, I pretty much had to wring out all of my clothes & hang them to dry.

So, of course, I was as soaked as a drenched rat by the time I was done! Couldn't wait to change out of those icky wet clothes!

Especially with the cold, rainy weather we've been having as of late, I'm definitely going to invest in a waterproof shell with a hood which is especially made for inclement-weather running.

Lesson learned!

All in all, I'm just happy that I was able to squeeze in my final run of week. And frankly, I'm so relieved that this week of rainy runs is finally over & done with now! Yea!!!!!!!!!!

0 Run 2, Week 5 (BOHR): It's Rainy & Cold Outside, But Sunny On The Inside!

Went running tonight around 8 pm & ran my longest run yet -- 48 minutes.

I was only supposed to run 32 minutes today, but since I ran out the door without first checking how many minutes I was supposed to run, I sorely miscalculated my guess-timatation by a whopping 16 minutes! ;-) How I guessed that I was supposed to run for 45 minutes today is beyond me!

The only sensible explanation I can think of is this: Wishful thinking! ;-) Apparently my mind & body are actually on Week 7, although in reality I'm actually only supposed to be on Week 5! ;-)

My body feels fine with the extra time thus far, so I'm just going to continue running a little bit longer each day, according to how I feel on that particular day. The long, slow runs are especially great for calorie burning, so I'm pumped to keep up the progress, although I still want to be careful & pace myself properly; plus, it's always important to listen to your body. For tomorrow's run, I'll probably run somewhere between 40 and 48 minutes again. We'll see how I feel....

The good news about me "skipping ahead & feeling fine" is that it means that my body's physical conditioning has improved considerably -- faster than anticipated -- and the mind is right there, accepting it all & loving every moment! 8-)

I have to say, I'm very stoked about the idea of completing this particular running program (BOHR). While the runs aren't always easy, I am very eager to make progress & can't wait to become a one hour runner!!!! ;-) It's like I'm the little engine that could, & I'm going to "I-think-I-can, I-think-I-can" all the way to the end of this program!

For those of you who regularly read my blog, you might've noticed that I didn't post yesterday as expected. Yes, I was supposed to run yesterday (i.e., Wednesday) but kept postponing my run, waiting for the drizzling rain to lift. Today, was pretty much a repeat of yesterday's weather, except that thankfully the rain slowed & lightened to a wet cold mist. I knew that there wasn't any sense in waiting much longer to run, especially since the forecast calls for rain for the remainder of the week. So, it was now or never.

Of course, I wasn't looking forward to tonight's run in the wet & the cold, since these weather conditions often lead to sickness. However, since I skipped yesterday, I knew I'd have to run today & tomorrow back to back to get my 3 weekly runs in, as I won't be able to run this Saturday.

I'll admit, it wasn't pleasant at all, atleast not for the first 25 minutes or so. People coming out of the surrounding local restaurants were looking at me like I was insane, or perhaps insanely dedicated, to run at night in such miserable weather. ;-) I didn't pay them any mind, instead choosing to chuckle inwardly at their amusing reactions.

I figure that I can't always run in perfect conditions, and since the upcoming marathon training isn't exactly going to be a walk in the park, that the experience would only help to toughen/prepare me to run under any circumstances.

So there I was, trudging along, grinning & baring it, running at a moderate, comfortable pace. And then something very strange happened around the 30-minute mark. The song "Move Any Mountain" by the Shamen came on & suddenly I felt a surge of energy.

For you clueless ones out there who don't follow music sub-cultures at all, this song was a fairly popular hit on the dance/electronica/college music charts back in the early 90's. The lyrics & the music are really uplifting & energizing; I'm not sure how many bpm it was, but the song certainly got me going at a fairly decent clip. Below is a video of the song:



Anyhow, as I was saying, I felt this incredible runner's high come over me in a big, rushing tidal wave of positive emotion & energy. At first it manifested itself inwardly as a tiny smile, and then as the little ripples of inner & outer warmth began to build inside my body, it went wild & spiked into a wide outward grin. I just couldn't contain myself. In fact, I was feeling so great at that particular moment that I didn't give a flying fig about the icky weather around me. It was amazing.

Best of all, I surprised myself by running longer & doing more mileage than I'd done previously, as compared to my last several weeks of running. I'm not exactly sure, but I think I ran somewhere between 4 & 5 miles. Yea! What a fantastic new milestone/breakthrough!

There was so much natural beauty to capture, that I lost track of time while snapping photos! Plus, a few people stopped to chat with me while I was taking pictures, so I must've been at the lake for several hours total.

Some fall flowers & fruits were in full-bloom, ...



...While others were still mere buds.



Appearing in abundance around the lake were milkweed pods in various stages. Some were completely closed or just opening, while others were already releasing their fuzzy seeds:



Arrows of streaming sunlight pierced the wooded areas surrounding the lake:



And the sky was as bright as the fall folliage:



Ducks and geese were out & about, enjoying the fine weather. (As were many people!)



Several weeping willows swayed in the gentle afternoon breeze:



And wooden bridges & docks welcomed many visitors, human & animal alike:




Usually, a small turtle family rests peacefully on a log at the far posterior end of the lake, sunning themselves with complete abandon. I'd sighted them on several previous occasions. However, yesterday, metal signs were the only evidence of their existence.



Although I wasn't able to spot the turtle family, I was thrilled to see the blue heron today, which is a much rarer occurrence.



The lake was so sunny & bright, its ripples glimmered in the sun.

0 2.6 Mile Walk + Run 1, Week 5 (BOHR): Now THAT'S More LIKE IT!

Walked 2.6 miles around the man-made lake at approximately 4:45 pm today. I was originally planning on running here earlier in the day, but I snapped pictures for well over an hour (which I'll share shortly in another post), & then got hungry! So I stopped at a restaurant around 3:45 pm for a late lunch/early dinner & had a bite to eat. Then of course, I had to wait a while before I could run, so I just walked around the lake while my food was digesting. I figured at the very least, I could get a head start on metabolizing my recent meal! ;-)

So, to beat traffic & to give myself more time to digest, I decided to run at a locale closer to home.



Then, I ran for 35 minutes at around 7:15 pm. It was a much better run than last week's set of runs. Finally, I've got some energy again!

Speaking of which, it probably helped that I've been eating more regularly & have been taking my vitamins. I think these changes have made all the difference.

Well, I'm off to run at my favorite man-made lake again & also snap some photos of it, since I didn't have my camera with me the last time I ran there (nor did I have any previous photos to post either).

I'll modify both of these workout posts to include pictures after I get back from my run.

OK, going out the door right now to run. Only this time, I've wisely decided to make a pitstop before I head out the door! ;-)

0 Some Thoughts About Last Week's Runs: Analyzing the Past to Move Forward in the Present

Just realized that last week I ran for a total of 104 minutes, which is ahead of schedule by 2 weeks on my running plan. Now of course I'm going dog-slow, but atleast I'm socking away the mileage.

The last run of this week is going to be a 44 minute-run, which might be a tad bit more challenging, as I'm already pretty tired by the time I cash it in on the last few minutes of my 35-minute runs, but we'll see. Who knows, I might have a hidden store of energy in a reserve compartment I never knew existed. ;-) Sometimes I really surprise myself with what I can pull out when I really need to do so.

Example: On my previous run, I had the extra steam to run faster to catch up to Erik. Yes, I forgot to mention that, even with his 1-minute bathroom break he managed to not only catch up to me, but surpass me. Now I wasn't going to have any of that. Especially as only last week he was barely making it, limping on his sore ankle. (OK, sometimes I'm secretly kind of competitive, but don't tell anyone I said that.)

Of course, the other part of me is openly glad that he's running ahead of me, as I'm not sure how I'd feel if he wasn't doing better than me by a certain point. I will add that I'm several weeks ahead of him, in terms of mileage & training, but if past history is any gauge of things, he'll soon (hopefully) be lapping me.

He told me that he's run sub-6 & sub-7 minute miles in the past, so it's not like he can't do it. Of course, he's not thinking about his pace at this early stage of the re-training process, but regardless, I know he'll improve a lot. He's a decent runner, as well as being very muscular & strong, so it'll be wonderful to watch him kick my running rear all over the place. No, really I mean it. Of course, I'll still try to give him a run for his money, just because that's the way I am. ;-)

OK, I'm now doing cartwheels of joy in my mind, as I contemplate him getting into shape & achieving a higher level of fitness. Yea!

As for my own speed & fitness, I'm going to try to get beyond my former personal bests that I set in track & field & during road-races. I'm not being unrealistic; let me explain:

I once ran a couple 7-something minute miles when I was in much better shape; this was approximately 8+ years ago. Back then I was closer to my ideal weight, but I wasn't exactly as strong as I'd been in college & during the immediate years following college.

So, I think if I get back into weight-training & lose the extra pounds holding me back from achieving faster paces, I might be able to run atleast one of those 7-something minute miles. We'll see. If I could even get past the seven-minute marker just once, even if it took me 3 years to do so, I'd be jumping for joy!

Now, it's one thing for me to run a 7-minute mile once, but I'm honestly not sure how many of those I could do, even with lots of training. I don't want to say an outright "No, I can't do that," because I don't like to set limits before I even try. I'm hoping that my marathon-training will take me to new heights, & help me crack past some of these formerly impossible-seeming barriers.

My former long-distance road race times are nothing to crow about, so that marker will be much easier to surpass. ;-)

Frankly, I know I'm not very fast as a long-distance runner, (especially if you were to compare me on a national/international scale), but you better believe I have great power & speed in the shorter distances! 8-) I'm not saying that I could qualify for the Olympics or anything (hahahahaha!), but I do, or atleast did, have some incredible speed back when I ran the shorter distances in track & field.

OK, enough crowing about the past. Time to get to work & ultimately prove it to myself in the near-future.

4 Run 3, Week 4 (BOHR): A Run Is Just A Run Is Just A Run Is Just A Run!

Erik & I went for a run in an old favorite location around 11 am today. He ran for about 30 minutes total & I ran, as scheduled, for 35 minutes total. We ran around a picturesque man-made lake, which was ironically teeming with nature & natural beauty. I guess the wildlife doesn't really care who made the lake, just as long as it feels like home. ;-)

It was a beautiful sunny day & the temperature was about 65-68 degrees. Of course, it felt wonderful & warm in the sun & slightly cold & breezy in the shade.

The day felt even more beautiful because we were in such beautiful surrounding. Weeping willows & vibrant fall trees gracefully frame the lake. And underneath them are swans, geese, & mallards, and turtle families on logs. (A lone blue heron also calls this lake home, although we didn't see him today.) All of the serene images make for a picture postcard moment.

The same could not be said for my run. It was yet another slow, perfunctory run, as I was once again -- surprise, surprise! -- feeling tired & low-energy. (I just bought huge bottles of iron & B-complex vitamins today, so hopefully that'll help some.)

To make things worse, after downing a bottle of water before the run (big mistake!), nature was calling for us both & a bathroom was nowhere in sight. Every bounce up & down just made the feeling worse, as it felt like a seismic wave of liquid jiggling inside. Not the most conducive circumstances for running at a decent pace.

After taking care of the above, Erik had a much better run than me, as it's easier for a man to do what a man has to do, if you get my drift. ;-)

Furthermore, my mind & body just weren't into the idea of running today, but I ran anyhow because I knew it was up to me to do it regardless of the resistance coursing through every fiber of my being. So, notwithstanding my less-than-enthusiastic attitude & tired bod, I simply ran today's run just to run it & get it over with as soon as possible.

It's so important not to play mind-games with ourselves, get past the emotional & mental crapola we are thrusting out of our heads at any particular moment, & just get it done. That's the one thing that actors, soldiers, & athletes share in common. ;-) When the lights come up, it's game-time, & the show must go on, there are no do-overs. (Gee, look how I managed to fit several cliches into a single sentence! ;-) )

But seriously, athletes can't afford to play mind games with themselves. Mind games threaten to derail our progress. And we can't have that, now can we?!

I'll be blunt: Some days (or in my case, weeks!) the runs are slow, the energy is non-existent & the pace is glacial, but I just pound out the run anyhow. Like today.

Oh well, atleast my OCD-like tendancies are finally doing me some good, other than compelling me to reorganize my sock drawer, kitchen, & entire wardrobe closet. It's imperative that I run a minimum of run 3 times a week, or I won't be able to face myself in the morning....

OK, I'm only slightly kidding about the OCD-like tendancies, but I'm sure you've heard it a thousand times: Running is addictive. And after a while, you feel compelled to run. That about sums it up for me.

Tomorrow is another day. And thankfully a day of rest at that! ;-)

0 Strength-Training: Small Weights, Lots of Reps

OK, here's what I've done so far:

Lifted 5 pound free weights, 20 reps each arm, doing the following exercises:

And I also did the vertical butterfly press, which I can't seem to find a picture of for some reason. Plus, I did various arm stretches, etc., etc.

It's not much, but it's a start....

OK, I just did 10 (bent-knee) push-ups & 50 crunches. There, that wasn't so bad now, was it?! I might even feel inspired to lift now. ;-)

0 Weigh-In: Veni, Vidi, Vici: Looking For Vindication Beyond Numbers On The Scale

Veni, vidi, vici. (For those of you who need a translation: I came, I saw, I kicked ass!)

Yesssssss, finally! Despite some initial fallout over the last few days, I've regained my belief in eating "normally" again. [For those of you who are just tuning in & might be potentially confused by what I mean, let me explain: Over the past few weeks, I'd lost my appetite via running & was afraid that the more recent return of my appetite would slow down, altogether stop, or gradually reverse (some of) the fantastic weight loss progress I'd made thus far. With the return of my appetite, I did initially gain 0.6 lbs. two days ago, but thankfully, after last night's run, lost this weight & then some, all the while continuing to eat regular meals.]

So, how did this amazing mental transformation happen, you might ask? Well, the proof is in the pudding, er, on the scale, I mean. ;-) The scale shows a drop of 1.2 pounds, so not only did I lose the 0.6 pounds that I gained two days ago, but I've also lost an additional 0.6 pounds to boot! Yea! Yea! Yea!!!!!!! That's enough to make me a believer again.

The only thing slightly concerning me is my scale's body fat readout, which showed a 1.5% gain. I'm not sure how accurate the reading is, but I'll measure it again in a few days to see......

Anyhow, I'm not going to let a little body fat percentage increase ruin my day. ;-) I think it's best to measure numbers over a longer period of time, so I'll just chalk this one up to too much whey protein powder in yesterday's mango smoothie. LOL.

Over the past 9 days, I've had little ups & downs on the scale, & am trying not to let my mood go up & down right along with them! Now, that's certainly a key accomplishment, eh?!!!!

But seriously, it's important not to get bogged down in the day-to-day (or in my case, every-other-day) readouts, but to focus instead on the overall trend. And thankfully, that trend has me moving in a slimmer direction. Right now, I'm 0.6 lbs. thinner than I was 6 days ago. So, although the weight loss progress has slowed a bit over the past week (i.e., only 0.6 lbs. lost), I'm just happy that the pounds are continuing to drop off, however gradually. Right now, I've lost of a total of 16.8 pounds, with 13.2 more to go!

Through a bit of trial & error, I think I'm finally going to get this eating thing back to normal & still lose fat.

It feels really good to be eating regularly again. Now, the next step is to figure out how to get to the next level of fitness & nutrition.

I keep reminding myself that every pound lost equals a faster running pace (approximately 2 seconds per mile faster), which is certainly motivation. And also, every pound of muscle I build will help to burn fat. So I better get into the gym & start lifting, eh?!

Oh yes, I still have yet to get into the gym & lift (for the first time in a long time!). I almost forgot to mention that insignificant detail. ;-)

Out of pure shame & embarrassment over my extreme procrastination in this area, I'm going to now drop to the floor & do 10 pushups. And then 50 sit-ups. So, I'll check in with you shortly to report on my progress.

0 Run 2, Week 4 (BOHR): Where Has My Energy Gone This Week?

I went for a run around 7:30 pm tonight. It was 75 degrees & there was a slight breeze. I was supposed to run 29 minutes but intead ran about 35 minutes total, doing my usual extra minutes to get back to the starting point.

I'm just going to come out with it: My run was slow & lackluster. I barely had any energy. But I don't think it was due to lack of appetite, which has been my usual problem over the past few weeks: Today I ate a mango smoothie & a banana, nibbled on some almonds & sun-dried tomatoes, & drank a few bottles of water throughout the day. And tonight, I'm going to have a post-run dinner of steamed vegetables & tofu with a few steamed vegetable dumplings.

I'm honestly afraid to weigh myself tomorrow morning, as I worry I'll have gained more weight, especially after eating tonight's dinner. Please note that I'm not overeating, but rather eating appropriate portion sizes.

I still worry that eating "normally" will make me gain weight, even though I'm running. And especially since my runs have been lackluster & unenergetic, I worry that it's not enough to counter the calories I'm eating during the day.

I don't want to resort to calorie-counting, as I've never been much for this eating strategy. Frankly, I think this strategy is mainly used by women who pick at their food like birds & really don't want to enjoy their food. ;-) Notice you don't see too many men counting their calories.

Yes, I despise those women who crow proudly about how they eat nothing but unsubstantial salads, & are probably repressed in more ways than one. Frankly, I'd rather base my meals around portion-sizes & just eat low-fat, nutritious whole foods.

Anyhow, enough ranting about uptight women who probably need to eat something so their blood-sugar makes them less b*tchy. ;-)

I enjoy food, & am proud of the fact. I'm not one of those wimpy eat-nothing-but-salad people. While it's certainly true that I like my veggies, I still realize that balance in one's diet is essential. Now, all I'm waiting for is my appetite to normalize, so my mind & my body can be on the same page!
