6 My Tentative 2008 Race Calendar + My Job Hunt Begins!

Since I haven't raced for quite a while, my 2008 race calendar is going to be just like my exercise program, very moderate & humble in its beginnings!

Here's a preliminary list of races I'm planning to run this year:

Saturday, April 26, 2008, TBD (?) - Lewisburg 5-Miler. (That is, if it's still on for this year! Can't seem to find any information online about this race, so that's not exactly encouraging. Any local people reading this who know details, you're welcome to comment on this post!)

Saturday, June 21, 2008, 8:00 am - Run For the Roses 5K. Hope to run this race with my CT5K running buddy (i.e., the same person I've been blogging about here!).

Saturday, July 19, 2008, 8:45 pm - Rockville Twilighter 8K (a.k.a., the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8k). This is a favorite race of my friend, Janice. Hope she runs it this year!

There are a few more I'm considering, but I'm not quite sure what my schedule's going to allow, seeing as how I might be doing some last-minute wedding planning (!).

Originally our wedding was planned for Memorial Day weekend of May 2008, but we'd halted plans after my grandfather's passing a few months ago. So, while friends & family keep pressing us for details, I really haven't done much of anything in the way of planning. I'm so incredibly unprepared! -- I haven't secured the ceremony or reception site, or even picked out a gown, & it's less than 5 months away. Totally nuts, I know! We'll probably end up doing something really low-key, since neither of us has much time for planning an elaborate affair! We're thinking of having a small family gathering for immediate family only, or eloping, if all else fails! ;-) If my mom wants, she can plan a gathering for friends & the extended family, but right now, I just can't think about any peripheral plans or details, as I'm already feeling quite overwhelmed as is, trying to juggle all of my plans & projects!

One of the reasons for this, is that I've decided to turn my jewelry business (i.e., Ferlanti Couture & Wildfire Designs Jewelry) & newly burgeoning tea company (i.e., Ladybug Tea Company back into part-time endeavors, & instead, re-enter the job market again. So, I'll be looking for employment as my first priority, before I can even begin to think about planning a wedding!

Yes, I've decided to return to a career in writing/editing. Through my many months of blogging, I've discovered that I really & truly miss writing & editing & would like to return to these activities in a professional capacity.

Over the years, I've done writing & editing of various sorts --At one point I was a Desktop Publishing Editor for a large federal contractor. (I wrote & edited proposals, & did graphic design & even some desktop support, in an unofficial capacity.) I've also written tons of technical documentation (technical manuals, articles, etc.) & presentations for various IT jobs (i.e., systems/network administration & analysis, etc.), & more recently (i.e., in 2006), as the program manager of a federal contract (i.e., the Lister Hill Center at NIH), I wrote annual reviews, articles (for the company's corporate newsletter), & proposal/contract-related documentation, etc.

Honestly, I can't ever remember a time when I wasn't writing. Even when I was very little, I loved to write about the world around me, even if that did mean my mother had to clean off pencil & crayon marks from the occasional wall or two. ;-) By age five or so, my short stories were published in various elementary school publications. In high school & college, I wrote fiction, essays, screenplays, & poetry, some of which was published in various publications (Tarasque, Queen's Head & Artichoke, etc.). (I was also an Editor-in-Chief for the former publication.) I've always loved words & writing!

But back to the job hunt: I've worked in the bio-medical/life sciences & technology arena for 15+ years of my career, so I'd welcome the opportunity to continue in that field, in either a management or writing/editing capacity.

Alternatively, I'd be interested in writing/editing journals or magazines in other areas as well. I've got a particular passion for writing about running, fashion, cooking, & music, as these are also some other areas in which I have expertise.

So, if you are an editor or publisher who just happens to be reading this blog, & are interested in hiring me, I would welcome the opportunity to discuss available job openings.

Even if you aren't in the publishing industry & happen to know of any journals or magazines looking to hire a writer/editor, you're welcome to comment here! ;-)

I'd certainly appreciate any useful advice, insight, or job leads that you have to offer!

Wow! What an impressive resume...

Why don't you start your own running magazine to rival the big guns?! Now there's a challenge for you.

Good luck with the wedding plans and the re-entry into the job market. Exciting times for 2008.

Thanks, Steve, for all the compliments & well-wishes! The running magazine idea is certainly an intriguing idea. So can I count on you as one of the writers? ;-)
